Gold, oil reach highs amid U.S. recession fears, London, England (CNN) - World stock markets were shaken Thursday as problems facing the ailing U.S. economic juggernaut continued to send ripples of fear through investors. Gold hits $1,000 an ounce for the first time. U.S. dollar hits 12-year low against yen, slumps to record low against the euro. UK FTSE 100 drops 1.9 percent. Paris, Frankfurt indices down more than 2 percent. Japan's Nikkei 225 falls 3.3 percent; Hong Kong Hang Seng plunges 4.8 percent.

Southwest flies in dangerous sky
Southwest grounds planes, places three on leave (CNN) -- Southwest Airlines has grounded dozens of planes following allegations that the airline broke federal safety rules, the airline said. Forty-four Boeing planes were grounded "to determine whether they should go through further safety inspections," Southwest Airlines spokeswoman Whitney Eichinger said Wednesday. She could not confirm whether they were fuselage inspections or rudder inspections, issues which have recently raised concerns among Federal Aviation Administration officials and congressional investigators.

Eliot Spitzer is under investigation for allegedly meeting with a prostitute in a Washington hotel, two sources with knowledge of the investigation told CNN.
